John F. Morrow, Sr. grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and graduated from Wake Forest University School of Law cum laude in June of 1965. After graduation, John served his country as a member of the Army Judge Advocate General Corps. John attended JAG school at the University of Virginia in 1965. In January 1966, John Morrow began his work for the Army at the 5th Army Headquarters, Chicago, Illinois, where he practiced in the General Court Martial Litigation Division. In August 1967, John left Chicago and worked in the Army Defense Appellate Division in Virginia until 1968. John received an Honorable Discharge from the Army in 1968.
John returned to Winston-Salem in 1968 where he practiced with Harold Wilson at Wilson & Morrow for close to a decade. John and Larry Reavis formed and practiced together at Morrow and Reavis from 1977 to 1986. Since 1987, John has been in practice with Chuck Alexander and others at which is now known as Morrow Alexander Porter & Whitley, PLLC. John's areas of practice have included state and federal criminal defense, business litigation, motorsports law, personal injury, wrongful death litigation, medical malpractice and family law.
For decades John has been a speaker at continuing legal education seminars and the like. He has lectured at no fewer than 15 CLE's for Wake Forest University, the North Carolina Advocates for Justice and the North Carolina State Bar. John has also lectured on numerous occasions at the North Carolina Legal Secretary Association's meetings and the North Carolina Podiatry Association conventions. In 1986, he was awarded the Harvey A. Lupton Award of Forsyth County by the Criminal Defense Lawyer's Association. He has been a two-time recipient of the Boss of the Year award from the Winston-Salem Legal Secretary Association.
John has been a member of the North Carolina State Bar Association since 1968 and a member of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice (formerly NCATL) since its inception. John is currently serving a three year term on the North Carolina State Bar Association Family Law Counsel.
John is a devoted supporter of Wake Forest University and served on the Wake Forest Law School Counsel from 1990 through 1993.
John became a Board Certified Family Law Specialist with the North Carolina State Bar Board of Specialization in 1989, the year certification began, and has been a specialist since that time. John personally challenged and encouraged other Forsyth County attorneys to take the first specialist exam. This encouragement worked and eleven of the original Board Certified Family Specialists were from Forsyth County.
Since 2000, John has been a Fellow with the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and has served on several committees of the North Carolina Chapter. John received his AAML Family Law Arbitration certification in 2001.
John Morrow has been at the forefront of alternative dispute resolution and since 1996 he has been a certified family law and divorce mediator. John is often selected as a mediator and/or arbitrator in complex family law cases.
John was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court in 1972. In October 1979, John argued in front of the United States Supreme Court. John is admitted to and has practiced in the Middle District of North Carolina, the Western District of North Carolina and the Middle District of Michigan. John has had a long and successful appellate practice before the North Carolina Court of Appeals and the North Carolina Supreme Court.
John Morrow has carried and AV rating with Martindale Hubbell since 1975. He has been listed in the Best Lawyers in American since 1995. John has also been listed in Super Lawyers and North Carolina Legal Elite for many years.
John has appeared in at least 25 courthouses across North Carolina and has, tried in excess of 100 criminal and/or civil jury trials in the North Carolina Superior Courts.
In addition to practicing law, John has nurtured the careers of many young lawyers, teaching them along the way what it means to practice law the "right way."
In addition to his many legal accomplishments, John is a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He has been married to his wife Karen for over forty years. His son, John F. Morrow, Jr. is an accomplished litigator with Womble Carlyle Sandridge and Rice in Winston-Salem, and his daughter, Shannon Morrow, is a well-respected artist residing in Durham, North Carolina. John has three young grandsons to whom he is devoted. Outside of the courtroom, John is the happiest when he is at Lake Norman with his family.
John continues to practice full-time and is busier than ever. He is a highly sought after attorney, especially in complex equitable distribution and family law matters.
